On this page I will provide you with an introduction to my Narrative Project along with links to relevant blog posts that are apart of my writing process. My Narrative Project will be a story from my personal life when me or someone close to me made a decision that had a negative impact on my life. During week 3 of class, we were given two readings to analyze; What is Creative Nonfiction? (Lee Gutkind) & Making Scenes in Memoir (Lee Martin). These pieces were to give us a better understanding of creative nonfiction writing and creating scenes in that writing; which led us to writing a scene from a moment in our present life. The following week we were told to read and annotate Bullet in the Brain (Tobias Wolff). After reading that piece we rewrote a scene of action from the story, and then wrote a scene of action from our current life. These blog posts helped us to master writing in present tense. Week 5 was when we started writing in past tense. We read The Yellow Wall-Paper (Charlotte Perkins Stetson) and rewrote a scene of action in the story, just like the previous week. Then we wrote a 250 word scene from our past about a moment when someone close to us made a decision that had a negative impact on our life. This is the beginning of us composing our first draft of our Narrative Project. The following week we revised that scene based off feedback from our classmates and added to the story to make it 450 words. After composing our first draft of the Narrative Project, we were asked to create a found poem to re-genre our piece. Found poetry was new to me and I really enjoyed this approach. Composing the second draft of my Narrative Project was a little difficult for me. I created a counterfactual story within my narrative, where I rewrote the major action to something that didn't actually happen. I then reflected on this and explained how it affected me in different ways.
Here I will provide drafts of my narrative project:
